From 1917 through 1953, the U.S. military used 22 different hand cart models (with a small number still in use during the Vietnam War). Until now, however, there hasn’t been much printed material available on these handy implements that have become favorites of reenactors, collectors, and military vehicle restorers.
Scherrer has compiled a significant book that presents cart production contracts, reports of the Infantry Board testing during 1935-36, as well as the different variations on carts. Naturally, a large portion of the book is dedicated to the carts of WWII including the M3, M4, M5, M6, and the standardized M4A3. However, there are detailed chapters dedicated to experimental carts, Signal Corp carts, mortar carts, and many others. The manual for the widest-produced military cart, the M3A4, is reprinted as an appendix.
This is one of those books you want to buy — it will be the military hand cart go-to for years to come. — JAG
